Walter Naveau, the Chief of the Mattagami First Nation near Gogama says his community is planning on hiring their own environmental specialist following the third train derailment in the region.

Chief Naveau says the decision was made after his initial contact with CN Rail. He says, they refused to provide copies of the air quality assessment testing, leaving him mystified and wanting more answers.

But the Chief says their working relationship is improving despite not trusting CN Rail at first. He says they are starting to work closely with CN rail following a visit that changed the way they move forward. Naveau says CN rail visited the Mattagami First Nation community and the respectful way in which CN Rail treated the elders and community “spoke volumes”.

Chief Naveau says water quality and environmental concerns are still top of mind
