On top of being the biggest Kayak Challenge ever, now you’ll be able to help a child play the sport they love.

The proceeds from this year’s 3-person kayak race are going directly to Kidsport and Tourism Manager, Guy Lamarche says it’s about building new partnerships to make Timmins a better place to live.

“From my view point, it was an opportunity for the Kayak Challenge steering committee it’s away to build capacity. The more people who can get into a boat and experience the sport of kayaking, the more likely they are to get into the sport as live an active lifestyle.”

President of the local Kidsport chapter, Colleen Landers says many people don’t know what Kidsport is and this is a way to get more exposure.

“It’s a not for profit organization helping under privileged children from low-income families be able to play sports.  There are many in Timmins and children need that opportunity for social activity and physical fitness.”

Landers says the Timmins chapter only has a budget of $55,000 and have already given out $36,000 to over 130 children this year.  She says for this year’s 3-person race you can pay the $150 entry fee yourself or fund raise it.

“It’s for fun, there’s no competition but it’s all for a good cause.  Charitable receipts will be given to teams as well.  We have prizes for best effort, best time, best dressed, and a prize for most money raised.  The race is only 200m long.”

Rehab Plus is also sponsoring the event and is donating  prizes and money to Kidsport.
