OPP investigate bear attack

Officers with the Matheson detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police responded to a report of a bear attack at Watabeag Lake early Friday afternoon.

Two women were walking in the cottage area of Watabeag Lake when they encountered an aggressive bear.

One of the women was attacked by the bear and sustained injury requiring medical treatment at a Matheson area hospital.

OPP officers attended the area and located the bear.

The bear displayed aggressive tendencies toward the officers and the bear was destroyed by the officers as a result.

The victim, a 60 year woman from Guelph, Ontario, has since been released from hospital.

Watabeag Lake is located approximately 40 kilometers south west of Matheson.
