It’s one of a bevy of new laws being introduced Sept. 1st in Ontario to curb distracted drivers.  The Timmins Police’s Kate Cantin says distracted driving is divided in three groups: Drive with Displayed Screen Visible to Driver, Drive While Using a Handheld Communication Device, and Drive While Using a Handheld Entertainment Device.

“Even at stops signs, even at red lights, even if the driver just has is in their hands, that’s all considered distracted driving.’

Cyclist are also getting a little more protection.

“The set fine for door-ing a cyclist is up to to $365 plus three demerit points.  Driver are also expected to give one metre when passing a cyclist.  If not, they can expect an $85 fine or $150 in a community safety zone.”

The move over law is also getting revamped.  drivers are nor required to move over to the next lane, if possible, for tow trucks attending an emergency scene.

New laws coming into effect Jan. 1st include having to wait for a pedestrian to completely cross at a cross walk before turning left or right
