2015 debateA historic 11-week federal election campaign wraps up tonight with the results, and we have full coverage of the votes shaping our area and our country as a whole.

It takes 170 seats for a majority government, with a total of 338 seats in Parliament up for grabs, up 30 from the last election.

Due to population growth, 15 seats have been added in Ontario, six each for Alberta and British Columbia and three more for Quebec.

Locally, Timmins-James Bay has four candidates to choose from.

  • John Curley (Conservatives)
  • Max Kennedy (Green)
  • Todd Lever (Liberal)

Polls across the country close at the following times (all times Eastern):

  • Newfoundland 7 p.m.
  • Atlantic 7:30 p.m.
  • Eastern 9:30 p.m.
  • Central & Mountain 9:30 p.m.
  • Pacific 10 p.m.

We will keep an eye on four other races across Northern Ontario on top of our own, including Nipissing-Timiskaming (which was decided by 18 votes in 2011), Sudbury, Nickel Belt and Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing.

Also on the night, we will quickly go over races involving the three main party leaders: Conservative Leader Stephen Harper (Calgary Heritage), Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau (Papineau) and NDP Leader Tom Mulcair (Outremont).

7:30pm: Looks as if the Liberals have control of Newfoundland.  A half hour ago, the polls closed in that area and lead in five electoral districts.  According to elections.ca, they own just over 72% of the vote thus far.

7:45pm: Polls closed for the rest of Atlantic Canada, and the Liberals still with a healthy lead.  They have five seats wrapped up, while leading in five other races.  The Conservatives and NDP lead one race each.

8:15pm: Liberals have a VERY strong showing in Atlantic Canada.  They have 12 seats locked up and lead in 19 other races.  The other parties have nobody leading.

8:30pm: The Liberals are up to 23 seats elected.  They also lead in eight other ridings.  The Conservatives lead one riding at the moment.  Polls close in an hour for the Eastern, Central and Mountain time zones.

9:00pm: We can confirm that the Liberals are pretty well sweeping Atlantic Canada.  They have 28 MP’s elected, with another five races leading.  POLLS CLOSE IN 30 MINUTES!

9:30pm: Polls are now closed in our area, as well as others in the East, central and mountain time zones.  As of now, the Liberals still lead three polls and have 30 MP’s elected.

Get ready for all the results to come in, they will be coming in quickly but we’ll give you the information on key ridings.

9:40pm: First local results are trickling in.  Angus (1,265) holds a lead over Lever (1,174). Meantime, the NDP and Liberal candidate in Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing are tied with 16 votes each. Liberals also leading in Sudbury, candidate Paul Lefebvre with 20 votes.

9:55pm: Angus continues to lead the  NDP candidates also have a lead in Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing and Nickel Belt still in possession of the Liberals for now.

Still 30 seats elected for the Liberals, and leading 48.  Conservatives lead 41, NDP lead 11 and Bloc Quebecois lead one race.

10:05pm: Angus at 2,272 votes, leading Lever at 1,868, Curley sits at 1,483 and Kennedy has 125 votes.

Elsewhere, early results show the Liberals leading Nipissing-Timiskaming.  Sudbury and Nickel Belt both have Liberals leading the way as well and Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing have the NDP leading.

Stephen Harper and Justin Trudeau both lead their local races, but Tom Mulcair is trailing in his riding to a Liberal candidate.

10:10pm: Overall, the Liberals have 32 MP’s elected and leading 123 other races.  The NDP have one person elected, and lead 21 other races and the Conservatives aren’t on the board, but lead 92 races.  The Bloc Quebecois are leading six races as polls are now closed across the country.

10:20pm: Angus is starting to pull away, leads Lever by just over 1,000 votes.  Also, the Liberal candidate (Anthony Rota) is up in Nipissing-Timiskaming over incumbent Jay Aspin (Conservative) by about 1,100 votes.

Paul Lefebvre (Liberal) has been elected in Sudbury, and is one of 38 MP’s on the board so far.  The Liberals are up in 135 other polls.  The Conservatives have 19 elected MP’s and lead 75 and the NDP have two elected and lead 22 (including Angus).

10:25pm: No surprise, but Harper and Trudeau are elected, and Mulcair has pulled ahead in his local race.

10:30pm: 100 of 185 polls reporting that Angus has 8,239 votes, leading Lever at 6,940.

10:35pm: Overall, Liberals have 59 seats and lead 123; Conservatives at 35 elected with 62 polls in the lead, NDP have three elected and lead 22 and Bloc Quebecois has their first MP elected and lead eight ridings.

Anthony Rota has been elected in Nipissing-Timiskaming over incumbent Jay Aspin.

*BREAKING*

Multiple major media outlets reporting the Liberals have won a majority Liberal government.  Justin Trudeau needed 170 seats to win.

Locally, Charlie Angus has been re-elected in Timmins-James Bay.
