gas pumpsSurprise, surprise, gas prices are back in the news after a big jump at the pumps Tuesday evening.

After hovering around a dollar a litre for the last few months, Timmins gas stations sit at just over $1.11 a litre.  Timmins city council had sent a request to the Competition Bureau to look into possible price fixing in Northern Ontario.

Timmins-James Bay MP Charlie Angus took the fight to Ottawa in early February when prices in Timmins were lower, yet still nearly 35% more than pumps in Regina.

In talking with Black Wednesday, he says unless there is proof phone calls are made from one station to another on prices, there isn’t really anything the Bureau can do.

“It’s something we’re working very hard on, and we’ll probably have another resolution in the near future, asking for changes at the provincial level,” Black says.

Currently, Quebec and all four Atlantic provinces regulate prices.

The price of crude oil might be to blame, finishing Tuesday at over $42 US a barrel.
