Plans for the City of Timmins celebration of Canada Day are well underway. Again this year the celebration is being organized by Tourism Timmins and according to Mayor Black, “it promises to be one of the biggest and best Canada Day celebrations in recent memory with lots to see and do for every age group.”

The celebration gets under way at 11am on Friday July 1st from the Fred Salvador Field at Hollinger Park with the official opening ceremony scheduled for noon. Dignitaries will be accompanied by the Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps Tiger Band followed by a Legion Branch 288 and Branch 287 Colour Party. Following speeches and the singing of Oh Canada by Chantal Delorme, there will be a special presentation of Aboriginal culture including drum, dance and smudge, followed by the cutting of the Canada Day cake and distribution of red and white cup cakes.

The Canada Day program should appeal to all ages and nationalities and will include a children’s activity zone complete with face painting, inflatables, gyro, lazer tag, rope challenge, live music, performing arts, an exhibitor marketplace, as well as a variety of food and beverage vendors.

“The festivities will end with a bang and on a high note. This year, the residents of Timmins and surrounding area, will witness one of the largest fireworks displays the city has ever seen. This is in part due to the community minded efforts of Mr. Paul Woodward of The Bucket Shop. Paul has taken it upon himself to reach out to 22 like-
minded local businesses that wanted to give something back to the people of Timmins. It is his efforts, combined with the most generous support of his sponsor group, which has allowed us to incorporate a $20,000 fireworks extravaganza into our overall Canada Day programming, and for that we are truly grateful to those businesses that have supported the fireworks fundraising initiative” said Mayor Black.

“This is all about the sponsors. This is a group of people who have come together for the greater good of the community, a group of people who believe in the cause. Together we have made a positive impact,” said Woodward. The fireworks sponsor committee consists of 22 businesses and he was happy to see the Woodward family included. “I could not have done this without each and every one of them.”
