A summer street party with some Italian flair.

That’s how Chris Loreto described a proposed event by the Porcupine Dante Club to celebrate and teach others about Italian culture.

“Festa Italiana” would run Sunday, July 30th from 10am to 8pm, with no entry fee and open to people of all ages.

“There’ll be kiosks of Italian food, as well as food vendors and various urban markets,” Loreto told city council Monday night as part of a request to close off a section of Cedar Street.

“There will be a stage and live entertainment throughout the day with music and dancing.  There will be a grape-stomping contest as well, a beer garden in the parking lot as well as a dining area, (bocce ball) and of course, a big pig roast.”

The street closure would go from First to Second Avenue, but there would be a slight modification to allow the Timmins Fire Department to get out of their station in case of emergency.

The Downtown BIA will also be helping out in a partnership.  Loreto says they’re hoping to make this a yearly event.

Councillors responded to it positively, and looks like Timmins will get another event to look forward to this summer.
