A $5-million dollar funding application is drawing the ire of a couple city councillors.

The Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) funding would support the proposed Aquatic Centre. Councillor Joe Campbell raised questions about the project as a whole and voted down the request along with Councillor Rick Dubeau.

Campbell asked about the need of a fieldhouse and started to go in depth.

While it can be appreciated that Campbell is looking for savings, Mayor Steve Black pointed out the whole point of Monday’s discussion is whether or not the city should apply for provincial funding.

Black says councillors not even showing support to get funding is “challenging,” and maintains the project will not go ahead if the dollars aren’t there.

He also points out they’re not where they want to be in raising local funds either.

Council voted in favour 5-2 and will seek NOHFC dollars.
