Canada Road Safety week sure kept Timmins Police on their toes.

City police handed down 68 Provincial Offense Notices from May 16-22, including 40 speeding tickets.

The week saw a focus on the the “Big Four” dangerous driving behaviours—impaired driving, aggressive driving, distracted driving, and improper seat belt use—along with pedestrian and cyclist safety, and the ‘move over’ legislation in part with the 2017 DriveSafe campaign.

Police say the amount of offenses noted is “alarming” and remind drivers that the majority of collisions are preventable.

“By following simple traffic laws, drivers, pedestrians and all those who share the road can contribute to a safer community,” they stated in a release.

Some of the other tickets handed out include:

  • 1 unsafe lane change
  • 3 fail to yield to traffic on through highway
  • 2 drive while using handheld communication device
  • 2 fail to wear seat belt
  • 2 impaired driving related charges (contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada)
  • 3 amber light fail to stop
  • 2 disobey stop sign
  • 1 fail to move into another lane for emergency vehicle when safe to do so
