A big hole in the wallet of Detour Gold.

They are pleading guilty to criminal negligence causing death in connection to the death of 52-year old Denis Millette.

Millette died of acute cyanide poisoning through skin absorption while repairing equipment at the mine site on June 3rd, 2015.

The sentence was handed down to the company in Cochrane this past week.

Detour was ordered to pay a fine of $1.4-million dollars (CAD), and a corresponding 30 per cent surcharge.

In addition, the courts—as requested by Detour Gold themselves—ordered a restitution payment for Millette’s family for lost income through retirement.

As a result of pleading guilty, all other charges under the Occupational Health and Safety Act were dropped.

“We reiterate our sadness for the pain this has caused the family,” Detour President and CEO Paul Martin said in a statement, “No workplace death is acceptable and we are committed to continuing our efforts to work diligently towards our commitment to Zero Harm.”
