The four federal N-D-P leadership hopefuls had a final opportunity Sunday to make their cases before balloting begins to choose Thomas Mulcair’s successor.

Timmins-James Bay MP Charlie Angus, Manitoba MP Niki Ashton, Quebec MP Guy Caron and Ontario legislature member Jagmeet Singh took part in a leadership showcase at a caucus retreat in Hamilton.

Each had 22 minutes to present their plan for the party and all kept their verbal barbs targeted at the governing Liberals, not each other.

Singh, the perceived frontrunner, pitched himself as the candidate who can square off against Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to win in 2019.

Angus’s presentation focused on reconciliation with Indigenous communities, cutting student debt and economic inequality.

Ashton talked about eliminating tuition fees, while creating a national childcare system and a Crown corporation to fight climate change.

And Caron said the party must win back support in Quebec where it lost a lot of seats to the Liberals in 2015.

NDP Members will vote for Mulcair’s successor via mail-in or online voting starting today (Monday) with results to be announced in early October.
