Investing money into a new recreation facility could leave historical ones in the dust.

Councillor Joe Campbell says before committing dollars into aspects of the Aquatic Centre—like the fieldhouse—it would be wise to look at a study to expand the existing McIntyre Arena.

He says the city could add in box seats at the rink on the north side, which could also double as meeting rooms for conferences.

Campbell adds there’s also room for adding more seats and a lower foyer to the south, and extra seating capacity to the east.

He adds work is needed on the accessibility side of things, something he says the arena “falls tremendously short” on.

Campbell says if council goes with “this other project”—alluding to the Aquatic Centre—it would tie the city’s hands from doing anything substantial with The Mac for at least 4-5 terms of council.
