City council is steering clear of upcoming legal costs for one of their own.

City councillor Rick Dubeau put in a motion to have the city cover his expenses. But with the city’s lawyer opting against the move, council didn’t acknowledge the motion when it came time.

City Clerk Steph Palmateer first read out the request, adding councillors aren’t covered by the city’s insurance policy under certain exclusions—including charges under the Criminal Code.

Last Thursday, Dubeau was arrested and charged with corruption.

CAO Dave Landers says legal advice from the city’s lawyer did not recommend moving ahead with the request.

Councillor Joe Campbell says there’s more to the issue than what’s been discussed. He says he’s disappointed this was brought to council without advance notice and a chance to talk with the city’s lawyer.

Campbell admits he had read a letter circulated to council a short time before the meeting.

Councillor Pat Bamford clarifies they received the confidential letter from the lawyer with their recommendation a day prior.
