The Ontario Provincial Police is out with a couple releases of note for our region.

The first concerns multiple break in/thefts in Cochrane, while the other warns of counterfeit currency circulating in Timmins.

OPP say since June 1st, Cochrane OPP have investigated multiple break and enter and theft cases.

“Several areas within Cochrane have been targeted, however the majority of the infractions have been committed between 3rd and 8th Streets and 11th and 18th Avenues,” they say, “And many are still unsolved.”

Of note, they say 28 thefts and 19 break and enters have been reported to them.

The cases involve the theft of several items such as: electronics, bicycles, fuel, lawn ornaments, tools, Canadian currency as well as personal property.

All of these things were taken from either motor vehicles, residences, garages or businesses.

And while they continue to investigate, OPP is reminding the public to lock doors and windows, and remove valuables from vehicles.

Meantime, the public in Timmins is reminded to keep an eye on cash during transactions.

Counterfeit cash is making the rounds, and it’s said the money is “currently sold on the internet as replica game currency.”

The ‘cash’ is described as having Chinese markings and no serial number.

“Both residents and businesses are reminded to check bills carefully during transactions. If you suspect a bill may be counterfeit report it to your local police service”, says Detachment Commander, Acting Staff Sergeant Ryan Dougan.

For further instruction regarding counterfeit prevention, the bank note section of www.bankofcanada.ca offers valuable information.
