AngusCharlie_NDPTimmins-James Bay MP Charlie Angus and MPP Gilles Bisson are attending the Prospectors and Developers Convention in Toronto. They are meeting industry players and supporting the large team of North Ontario businesses.

Angus says Canada has immense natural resource potential but we have to move beyond the Conservatives ‘rip it out of the ground and ship it overseas’ mentality. “New Democrats understand that we can stimulate growth in the sector while ensuring long-term and sustainable vision for our country.”

On Sunday NDP leader Tom Mulcair spoke to the convention. He outlined the NDP’s plan to support Canada’s mining industry and reiterated the New Democratic Party’s commitment to smart and long-term resource development. Mulcair says the NDP has put forward concrete, practical proposals to strengthen our economy and make it work for Canadians.

Parts of the NDP’s plan are:

  • An Innovation Tax Credit
  • Reducing the small business tax rate
  • Extending the accelerated capital cost allowance for machinery.
  • Creating a respectful “Nation-to-Nation” relationship with Canada’s First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples.

At the convention Mulcair stated, “We will support mining companies hurt by the Conservatives’ cuts to support for capital intensive R&D. Unlike the Conservatives who have put mining on the back burner, Canada’s New Democratic government will work with industry, aboriginal communities and the education sector to ensure mining and mineral processing create economic opportunities for a prosperous Canada.”
