Timmins_Police_Service_logo_updThe Timmins Police Service is reminding those who drive commercial motor vehicles about the use of engine compression brakes (‘jake brakes’).

Engine compression brakes are often used to slow large vehicles, such as transport trucks, by releasing compressed air trapped in the engine’s cylinders.

This follows a complaint received regarding large trucks using this braking style, specifically in the area of Theriault Blvd. Timmins Police officers will be conducting enforcement regarding the use of ‘jake brakes’ on city streets.

Commercial vehicle drivers are reminded that the use of ‘jake brakes’ are prohibited on Timmins city streets, due to the excessive noise created when these brakes are used (City of Timmins By-Law #1995-4487).

The bylaw states that engine compression exhaust style brakes are prohibited on highways within the City of Timmins where the maximum speed is 70 kilometers per hour or less.
