Timmins_Police_Service_logo_updThe Timmins Police Service has been made aware of potential telephone fraud, where callers claim to be contacting residents on behalf of the Canada Revenue Agency.

In some cases, the caller will indicate that the victim has a fictitious debt and owes money to the CRA, and will then attempt to garner credit card or financial information.

If residents receive a call from someone claiming to be from the CRA, they are advised to verify the legitimacy of the call before taking any action.

The CRA never requests prepaid credit cards, asks for information regarding driver’s license, health card, or passport, and never leaves personal information on voicemails.

The most common method of communication from the CRA is via registered mail.

Should individuals wish to verify the legitimacy of a telephone call, they may hang up and call the CRA directly. To report a fraud, please contact the Timmins Police Service at 705-264-1201 or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre toll free at 1-888-495-8501.
