École secondaire catholique Thériault will be sending a girls team to the World Schools Cross Country Running Championships in Hungary in April 2016. The team was selected to represent the country based on the silver OFSAA team medal the Flammes won in November. The team, which will be made up of girls born between 1998-2001, will be traveling to Budapest, April 19th – 26th to compete in the ISF CROSS COUNTRY 2016.

The team members are grade 9 runners Meghan Boileau, Maxine Dupuis and Kristen Kornell;  and grade 12 runners Alexa Béland, Maia Kvas and Kiana Labranche. The team will be traveling with coaches Mrs. Carmen Lefort and Mr. Joel Ruel. ‘The runners are ecstatic about having this once in a lifetime opportunity to represent the country, compete at a world championship and discover Hungary. The runners have showed love for the sport of cross-country running and will be good ambassadors for the school, the City of Timmins, Ontario and Canada’ said Ruel, head coach of the cross-country team. Maia Kvas adds “The feeling is surreal. I would never imagine that this opportunity of a lifetime would jump into my life. High-caliber cross-country meets, like OFSAA, have already been such breath-taking experiences for me. I cannot begin to imagine the thrill I am going to feel competing against top schools from other countries around the world in Hungary!”

The parents of the runners have formed a committee to raise funds to offset the $16,000 cost of attending the World Schools Cross Country Championships. Anyone willing to help financially can contact one of the parents or one of the coaches at Thériault (267-1491). Donations will also be accepted online at https://www.gofundme.com/esct-xc_ISF2016.
