There’s a few possibilities that can come out of the Public Works budget, some Timmins city council simply cannot control.

But that’s not to say they’re have no control whatsoever, it’s just they have a major amount of dollars that’s not yet approved by higher levels of government.

Overall, the department is looking for a 2.12% budget increase with nearly 1%—or around $180,000—of it to cover hydro costs for street lights.

There’s also money being pegged for Class 6 roads, among other things.

(The increase could balloon to as much as 7.65% if city council decides to approve a request to add another $1-million dollars to the roads program.  Without it, the 2.12% increase equates to $382,950.)

Director of Public Works Luc Duval says the roads program for 2017 depends on their success in obtaining $3-million dollars in Connecting Link funding, as well as an OCIF funding grant of $963,000.

He says if they don’t get the funding, council has to either look at cancelling some projects to supplement funds, hold off on Connecting Link construction or look at debentures.
