A plan to install a crosswalk at the intersection near St. Mary’s Gardens has been given the boot.

Originially, it was noted that seniors at the Gardens were having a tough time crossing the busy Pine Street South roadway to get to the 101 Mall and the nearby St. Anthony’s Cathedral.

On Tuesday, the Municipal Accessibility Advisory Committee’s Dan McKay noted that crosswalks in general are dangerous for people that are disabled.

McKay noted someone with a visual impairment can’t tell if the crosswalk is malfunctioning, noting when he went blind, he utilized crosswalks in Toronto and felt scared every time.

He says a three-way stop at the intersection is the better option, as it’s safer and cheaper too.

A note added into the council package by Manager of Engineering Pat Seguin says the pedestrian counts don’t warrant a crosswalk be installed either. It also states a crosswalk would result in the loss of seven parking spaces nearby.

Timmins city council was in agreement, and a report on putting in a three-way stop will come back next meeting.
