Stars and Thunder Festival could have a completely different feel from the ground-level in 2018.

That’s because Timmins city council is leaning towards placing granular material (gravel) instead of undergoing hydroseeding or sodding options at the Fred Salvador baseball diamond.

Environmental Manager Scott Tam outlined the plan to council, saying the hydroseeding or sodding may not be ready for the summer festival. Or worse, the work could be done wrong and more money would need to be spent.

Laying granular material on the existing clay—taken from the site of the new EMS Complex construction at Northern College—would “minimize any muddy impacts that we may see in the spring.”

Tam adds it could be stripped down and re-used when it comes time to re-design the park layout.

The contract is looking like it’ll go to Interpaving Limited for just over $155-thousand dollars.
