With Christmas Day just two weeks away and residents in the midst of the busy shopping season, make sure to take extra precautions because with Christmas shoppers…unfortunately, come holiday thieves.

Timmins Police, along with other police agencies, are participating in the annual “Lock It or Lose It” campaign, a province-wide crime prevention initiative coordinated by the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police.

The goal is to make residents aware of the dangers of leaving vehicles unlocked and/or valuables left in plain sight.

“The reality is that if individuals make theft easy for criminals, they will lose their valuables,” Police Chief John Gauthier stated in a release.

“Crime prevention is a community responsibility, and we want to ensure that everyone remains safe and protected this holiday season and all year.”

TPS have left these holiday tips to help prevent you from becoming a victim of theft:

  • Never leave a running vehicle unattended
  • Always lock vehicle doors
  • Roll up all windows
  • Keep valuables out of sight (Ex: in the vehicle’s trunk)
  • Do not leave identification and personal documents in the vehicle’s glove box
  • At night or during extended parking periods, always park in a well-lit area
