About Dr. Rati Chand Vajpeyi

“I draw, I paint and every time I do so, it is a meditative and almost a spiritual process for me.”

As an Oncologist I have seen and experienced many facets of emotion, and this at times compels me to find a way to calm my own mind.

Art has been my means of finding my patch of sunshine since childhood. In my clinical practice my patients were introduced to art and I found that with a little encouragement and guidance, they found a renewed purpose for not succumbing to the arrows life threw at them.

Moving away from India forced me to withdraw from my busy unregulated schedule. There was now time to retrospect and introspect. I used art as a conduit to vent my emotions. I read, experimented and observed other accomplished artists. It took a while, but my art, which was earlier fast, abstract and a chaotic potpurri of scribbles and colour, began to slowly settle down. My act of drawing and painting became meditative. I learnt to focus and found a renewed purpose.

Today I draw each day. Slowly my art, like my grip on the turbulence of life, is improving. I am healing and finding that contentment. I work in graphite, charcoal, chalk and oils, Plein air (painting on location) and representational art (artwork which depicts something which is easily understood or recognized by the viewer) is my passion. Nature is my teacher along with those stalwarts who have worked so hard over centuries to perfect their art. I still have so much to explore, so much to learn – I shall keep moving forward.
