Longtime City Council member and beloved public figure, Lou Battochio, will be honored with a banner at the McIntyre Arena in Timmins.

At the city council meeting on Tuesday, council approved hanging a commemorative banner honoring Battochio’s legacy. The banner will hang in the rafters of the McIntyre Arena. Battochio passed away in November, 2018.

Battochio served as a municipal councilor for 25 years and he was fondly remembered by city residents as the “Mayor of Schumacher”. Battochio was a dedicated volunteer and a coach, referee, teacher and community organizer. His legacy will be honored at the McIntyre Community Centre, where he spent so much of his time.

Schumacher councilor, Joe Campbell, commented on his friend’s legacy.

“I don’t think anyone is going to match Mr. Battochio’s commitment to the community, to the city as a councilor all those years. To his commitment to Schumacher and being an ambassador for the city of Timmins and Schumacher for all those years. […] I think this is a fitting tribute.”
