**NORTH EAST OPP NEWS RELEASE**

In honour of National Volunteer Week, the North East Region OPP would like to say thank you to all of the OPP Auxiliary Unit volunteers.

OPP Auxiliary members receive specialized training to assist front-line officers on patrol, at community events, in crime prevention activities, and, at times, during emergency situations. Auxiliary members receive a 60-hour recruit orientation with topics including: powers of arrest, OPP policy and procedures, radio training, note-taking, self-defence, traffic control, and firearms training.

North East Region currently has seven active units that are always accepting applications:

  • James Bay East – Moosonee;
  • James Bay West – Kapuskasing/Hearst;
  • North Bay;
  • Sault Ste. Marie;
  • South Porcupine;
  • Sudbury; and
  • Temiskaming/Kirkland Lake.

In 2019, the application process has changed. Applicants can now apply online and information about the process can be found at www.opp.ca/auxiliary. An OPP Auxiliary member is provided with an opportunity to volunteer at events while representing the OPP in his/her community. They also assist uniform officers while on patrol which provides them with an understanding of the policing role in society. For some, it’s an opportunity to gain valuable experience in policing and provides a possible avenue for future employment with the OPP.

To be eligible to become an OPP Auxiliary member, you must meet the following qualifications:

  • Minimum 18 years of age;
  • Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident of Canada;
  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), or its equivalent, or successfully completed a college diploma or university degree from an accredited institution;
  • Class ‘G’ driver’s license with full driving privileges and no more than six demerit points;
  • No criminal record for which a records suspension (pardon) has not been received or an absolute/conditional discharge that has not been sealed;
  • Certified in Standard First Aid and CPR (Level C); and
  • Are of good moral character and are mentally and physically able to perform the duties of the Auxiliary position.

Prospective OPP Auxiliary members are required to complete a series of tests which include general aptitude and psychological assessment. If successful, a background investigation will then be conducted, including contact with present and past employers and references. A positive background investigation will result in an acceptance, followed by a seven day recruit orientation course.
