**KIRKLAND LAKE OPP NEWS RELEASE**

The Kirkland Lake Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) will be partaking in the Easter Long Weekend Seatbelt Campaign which runs from Friday April 19, 2019 to Monday April 22, 2019. The focus of the provincial traffic initiative is to make sure that all occupants of motor vehicles are wearing seatbelts.

If you wear a seatbelt properly, you are more likely to survive a collision. Evidence shows that Ontario’s seatbelt laws work. All motor vehicle drivers and passengers must wear a seatbelt that is properly adjusted and securely fastened.

If you are charged and convicted of a seatbelt violation, you could receive a fine between $200 and $1,000 along with associated demerit points.

Drivers are responsible to make sure that all passengers under the age of 16 are properly wearing a seatbelt or are in a proper car seat.

Using the right car seat is the best way to prevent serious injury to children in collisions. For information that will help you find the right car seat for your child’s height, weight and development, visit the ministry of transportation website at www.mto.gov.on.ca.

You can also book an appointment for a free car seat inspection with either the Kirkland Lake or Temiskaming Health Unit offices.

Traffic safety is everyone’s responsibility. Let’s make sure everyone arrives safely at their intended destinations.
