The Coronavirus, has been the most talked about topic in the recent weeks, as it should be. So far there have been over 10,000 cases confirmed in China and over 200 deaths… once again in China.

So far in Canada, there are three confirmed cases. One in British-Columbia and two in Ontario.

“To protect yourself against the virus, it’s very similar to the messaging we do during Influenza season (Flu Season) Things that people can do to protect themselves are, wash their hands frequently, use proper sneezing and coughing etiquette, avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth, and really avoid contact with people who are ill. If people have a fever or are not feeling well.. they should probably stay home.” -Lynn Leggett Manager of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Services. (Porcupine Health Unit)

The Virus may be in Toronto and British-Columbia, but that doesn’t mean it can’t come knocking on our door.

“With Air Travel (Flying) now, there is a possibility that we could have some cases in the area at some point. At this time we do not have any cases in our area. It is certainly something that the Health Unit is making sure that we work closely with our Hospital and Health Care providers to make sure that we can identify any cases early and put preventative measures in place.” Said Leggett.

Leggett went on to add, that this is a situation that can create fear among people but the important thing is to make sure that you have the right information. The way to do that is by visiting the Ministry of Health Ontario, Public Health Agencies Canada, and the World Health Organization.

Here’s a Clip of Lynn Leggett explaining how you can contract the Virus:

As far as worrying about flying to Toronto, she says the risk level over there is low, but just to be safe make sure to put in practice the prevention methods which is: washing your hands frequently, use proper sneezing and coughing etiquette, avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.

If you think you may have the virus, the Health Unit recommends you contact your Health Care Provider immediately.
